Protesting
Participating on Hands Off Protests in Oakland on April 5, 2025
I went to the Hands Off Protest on Saturday mainly because I wanted to be counted amongst those that are concerned with current administration. From the meddling of private information within the social security administration and IRS to the hap hazard “cut whatever” approach taken by DOGE; the lack of due process in deporting individuals to an El Salvadorian prison; the reckless lack of security when discussing war plans to the tariffs. There is so much to find abhorrent.
I enjoyed gathering with friends and neighbors as we met at BART to head downtown. The camaraderie of the group was exciting – we are all horrified at what is happening.
Imagine my disappointment when we arrived downtown only to find a program focused on certain local political races with specific local politicians featured. I understand the sponsors of the event were from very progressive groups and are entitled to choose their own speakers but what a lost opportunity for the rest of us who do not subscribe to a worker’s agenda. I am not sure many will return to another rally. If the organizers want to gather more attendees, they must broaden their coalition to include moderate voices, even in Oakland, California.
I will probably attend another rally for a short while to be part of a head count, but don’t rely on me to stay for 2 hours listening to propaganda.
